The 1-1/4" pinback, printed by Philadelphia Badge Company: Philadelphia, n.d., ca 1920, as imprinted on the edge.Jamaican Marcus Garvey was the founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA) and the leading voice of radical black nationalism in the early 20th century. He advocated for the establishment of an "Empire of Africa" and was nominated as the "Provisional President of Africa" by UNIA in 1920. This scarce pinback button was likely produced contemporaneously to commemorate the event.
