Document Signed W(illiam) W. Hunter", 1pp., (5-1/2" x 7-1/4"), Flag Off Comdg Afloat, Savannah Geo. August 19th 1863, as Confederate Naval Captain and Flag officer of the Savannah squadron, to Lieutenant Joel S. Kennard, commander of the Confederate steamer Isondiga. In full, "The President of the Confederate States, having set apart Friday the 21st inst. as a day of fasting, humiliation, and prayer, you will cause that day to be observed as the Sabbath, and no unnecessary work to be performed." Davis likely set the day aside as a result of their many recent defeats including the fall of Vicksburg, Gettysburg and John Hunt Morgan's defeat during his raid into Indiana and Ohio.
