Sydney Smith Lee (1802-1869), called Smith Lee in his lifetime, was an American naval officer who served as a captain in the Confederate States Navy during the American Civil War. He was the third child of Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee and Anne Hill Carter Lee, and the older brother of Confederate general Robert E. Lee. He served as chief of the Confederate Navy's Bureau of Orders and Detail.Commodore Josiah Tattnall (1795-1871) was an officer in the United States Navy during the War of 1812, the Second Barbary War and the Mexican-American War. He later served in the Confederate Navy during the American Civil War. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Capt. Tattnall held command of the Sackett's Harbor Station. Though he opposed secession, Tattnall resigned his commission on February 21, 1861. A week later, Governor Joseph E. Brown commissioned Tattnall as the senior flag officer of the Navy of Georgia. On March 26, 1861, he received his commission as a captain in the Confederate Navy.Document Signed "S(ydney).S(mith). Lee" on official printed letterhead "Office of Orders and Detail, C.S. Navy Department, Richmond Va" May 28, 1864, in part "You are hereby detached from the Isondiga, and will report to the Flag Officer Tattnall, commanding of the new Osteamer ... ... " and in response, "Reported, 2nd June 1864 "Josiah Tattnall", The name is changed from Ogeihee to the Macon by order.... "Josiah Tattnall, Comdg."
