Retained Copy of Letter written by Brig General Hugh W. Mercer to Savannah Squadron, Flag Officer William W. Hunter, 1pp., datelined Head Qrs Mil. Dist. Ga + 3rd Mil. Dist. So. Ga., Savannah, March 4, 1864. In part, "I am informed that a Government Steamer commanded by J. Pembroke Jones C.S. Navy containing a most valuable cargo of Army stores is expected nightly to arrive at this point .... I beg most respectfully ... that you may have your forces prepared to assist should she be attacked by the enemy .... signed H.W. Mercer."
