Confederate Prisoner of War letter written by "John J. Miller" to his future wife Mary E. Burd, datelined; Block 1, Room 12, Johnson's Island, Jan 18, 1864. Miller was an assistant surgeon in Company B, 12th Regiment, Missouri Cavalry (joined Sep. 2, 1861). Four pages, ink, with original cover, canceled 3c Rose stamp and canceled Sandusky O. Jan. 20.After expending one page discussing her advice and informing her that no apology is required, he moves to rumours of being moved. In part, "I think however that we will remain here ... I would regret very much to have to leave this prison to go to one that I know nothing about & have never tried, for we are certainly in a measure - comfortable. ... I feel that I am entitled to more privledges in prison ... I do not think however, that I smoke to an excess. ... I was pained to learn the unhappy condition of Charlie McNaly's health .. it would be sad for him to die."
