Confederate soldier's letter, 4pp., signed only "William". Datelined South Carolina Hospital, Petersburg, June 8th, 1864 written to his cousin. In part, "I met with a sad misfortune not long since I was on my way home, but I am thankful to my Maker that it was no worse ... The surgeon says he never saw a wound healing so fast as mine ... I hope it will not ne long ere I shall be able to resume my journey homeward ... I have no words to describe the excrutiating pain I had to endure for several hours after I was wounded. My foot and ankle was torn into fragments and if it had not been for Wm. Stevenson ... I surely would have died on the field. He spared no pain or excertions until he got me back to the Hospital at Swift Creek Bridge where they immediately amputated my leg which relieved my pain in a great measure. ... Still, I had another hard trial to undergo, that was being conveyed to Petersburg a distance of five miles. W. Stenvenson came and stayed with me two weeks and attended to me like a brother ... ... I heard that Tillie Stone had lost his arm at the Battle of the Wilderness. John Griffin and Tyler Hall was killed. ...."
