Confederate Veteran's Letter written by "M(ayberry) Hammond who on 5/15/1861 mustered into "C" Co. VA 4th Militia Infantry, was transferred out on 8/15/1861 into VA Bedford Light Artillery and re-enlisted on 2/7/1862. On 10/4/1862 he transferred into VA Purcell Light Artillery. Hammond was wounded 7/3/1863 Gettysburg, PA., POW 7/5/1863 Gettysburg, PA (Captured in Confederate hospital) and Paroled 9/25/1863 US Hospital, Baltimore, MD. After Hammond was mustered out, he was killed in Action by Federal Sharpshooter in 1864 while returning from leave to his Regiment. He is buried in an unmarked grave where he fell, near the Peaks of Otter, Va. The 2pp., letter is written to his brother, Roanoke, March 28/64, in part, "Having just heard of your safe arrival on your circuit - through some Bedford friends ... I hope you suceeded in getting your family and that portion of the War Confrence immediately under your charge - safely out of Yankee lines. ... I am now where I have so long desired to be at college ... I began regular course ..."
