Autograph Manuscript Report Signed "George J. Shepardson" who enlisted on 8/27/1861 at Earl, IL as a Captain and on 9/26/1861 he was commissioned into "I" Co. IL 4th Cavalry. He was Mustered Out on 11/3/1864 at Springfield, IL. Datelined La Grange Tenn. Nov. 28, 1862, to Col. Syle Dickey, 1pp., ink, fine. In large part, "On the 18th of this month with the force of 45 men I reconnoitered 200 Rebel Cavalry under Col. Dawson near Chestnut Bluff and fought them. Eight of the enemy were killed on the ground and 12 wounded of whom two have since died. My horse was killed under me. I received six shots one wounding my leg so that I now travel on crutches ... The other five shots were parried by a steel breast plate bruising my breast seriously ... I was captured with one private .... Myself and the private were paroled ...."
