Union Soldier's letter by Michael Hoffer 4th Maryland Potomac Home Guard Brigade Infantry on patriotic stationery with postally used patriotic cover. Hoffer enlisted on 10/30/1861 as a Corporal, and on 10/30/1861 he mustered into "B" Co. MD 3rd PHB Infantry, and was Mustered Out on 10/30/1864. Hoffer lived until 1934. February 18, 1862, 3pp, ink. In part, "... by all appearance and by the news that we have there was fifteen thousand prisoners taken the other day and some hie offercers and wea think that about the fourth of july weal all be discharged ... i hope you excuse bad spelling and righting, it is the second letter that i rout ...."
