Union soldier's letter written by Martin Minter who enlisted on 8/22/1862 as a private into "D" Co. MD 8th Infantry and was mustered out 5/31/1865 at Arlington Heights, VA. The six page letter is datelined, November 11, 1862, Williamsport, Washington County, Md. In part, "I am in the service now three months and have seen pretty hard times ..." Minter provides his brother in law with detail of the marching from Hagerstown to Williamsport over a period of about six weeks. He continues, " We marched back again as far as a place called Coustens Farm ... we captured several rebels there ... That our pickets were attacked out beyond the farm and we formed a line of battle in the woods. We were then informed that they were crossing at three different places and about forty thousand strong and were trying to surround us ..."
