A very rare war-date Union regimental broadside, 1p. 5 1/4" x 10", entitled: "Monument Erected by the Members of the 28th Regiment N. Y. Vol. To the Memory of Col. Dudley Donnelly".The bulk of the broadside's text recounts Col. Dudley Donnelly's storied military career and capable leadership while commander of the 28th New York Vols. and reads, in very small part: - it is wrought from the purest Rutland marble and is twenty feel high - on the edge of the moulding - the sculptor has executed a splendid - piece of high relief, with flags, guns, swords - and eagle in the center - below is the following inscription: Col. Dudley Donnelly - died at Culpepper, C. H. Va., Aug. 15, 1862, of wounds received at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, Aug. 9, 1863, Aged 37 Years- his body lies here, his spirit has gone to God - his memory is cherished -this testimony to the virtues of the fallen hero speaks volumes in his praise. It is the voluntary offering of those over whom he had exercised and enforced the stern rules of military discipline - [these suffering soldiers - created an esteem for the commander -". Negligible potting, else VG.Also included in this lot is a one page, 8vo., printed invitation, reading, in part: "Anniversary of the 28th Regiment, New York State Volunteers.
