Union Soldier's letter written by Michael Hess who on 9/18/1861 he mustered into "C" Co. PA 79th Infantry and was Mustered Out on 10/3/1864. Written in pencil on patriotic letterhead with original cover, datelined Camp Morehead, Columbia TN, May23rd, 62, to his wife. In small part, "We were in Columbia that is about 100 miles from here, we marched 200 miles down and up ... but I saw a great deal and if I ever get home I can tell you a great deal more ... we drove the rebels clear out and we had a skirmish with them ... we did not lose a man but they lost 35 killed and 25 taken prisoners ... we had twenty wounded ..."
