War-date Union soldier's letter, 8pp. 8vo., written on two separate patriotic stationery letter sheets, entitled: "Great Naval Engagement off Fort Wright" and "Brilliant Engagement of General Banks' Division with the Rebel forces under Stonewall Jackson, August 9th, 1862" by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., [n. p., but Newport, Kentucky], Sept. 27, 1862, reading, in part: "-we are on picket gard. I wish we could stay on picket all the time-we were on a general review yesterday-our whole brigade was there about six thousand infantry and there was three batteries of artillery-they sounded pretty sharp-when we get back you could hardly tell what color we were for the dust-our brigade expects to leave here in a few days to Virginia-Jack sends his love-he is still captain of the bunk. We have the best one in the hole comp.-I got up a paper against playing cards-we are mess No. 5. [We] have adopted the rule that if any of our mess is caught playing cards-he shall be reported to the captain-how many do you think I got [to vote yes]-I got all but three and I showed it to the captain and he said that it was a good rule. We expect to see the elephant. We have seen his track all ready-I just halted a boy and he had his pass and he gave me a poppas & it was good you better believe to Heaven-direct to Newport, Kentucky, 96th Regiment, Company B-your loving husband, A. A. Thayer." Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Negligible soiling, else VG.
