Union soldier's letter written by Benjamin H. Smith who enlisted 9/7/1861 and was mustered into Company A, NY 64th Infantry, 9/20/1862. He was discharged for disability 3/2/64. Smith was wounded at Gettysburg. The 4pp., letter comes with a patriotic cover "Gen. McClellan and His Staff". Datelined White Creek Station, 5 Miles from Richmond, June 2, 1862, to his Parents and Friends. In part, "I was the Battle yesterday, June 1, 1862. the 64th is literally cut to pieces. Co. A 20 wounded 4 killed ... I can't tell all, but there is 263 killed & wounded, but we had the pleasure of seeing the scoundrels go before the 64th at the point of the bayonet, led on by Gen. Howard, swinging his hat saying 'Follow Me 64th". After he was hurt, he had a private tie the wound. ... The Captain got his wrist hurt by a shot ... Our Lieutenant shot through the elbow ... Colonel got praise from McClellan who was on the field. ..."
