A war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Charles A. Fiske (WIA in left arm severely Gettysburg July 2, 1863), Co. K, 11th Mass. Vols., "White Oak Swamp 13 miles from Richmond, Va., May 31, 62", in part: "…I gave you the particulars of the fight as near as I could considering the exciting time…the Bull Run skirmish wasn't a circumstance to it. The part of the field that our Brigade occupied was thick woods and fallen trees and was what is called bushwhacking. The nearest that I came to being shot [was by] a bullet cut my canteen strings…our Division is occupying the extreme left of Heintzelman's Corps while the advance right wing is within 6 miles of Richmond…prospects look bright with one exception the retreat of Gen. Banks across the Potomac river…it may not affect the movements of McClellan as much as some say. Our camp is only 2 miles from Bottoms Bridge on the Chickahominy…an order was read…that we were to make all future movements without any knapsacks and we are to have 3 days rations in haversacks and 20 rounds of cartridges in our pockets…". Near fine.
