Beautiful color art, full panel of the period envelope, "U.S. Steamer ADELA Gulf Squad" which is signed by the artist, "Jas. W. Browning". On the flap Brown writes "A present to Aunt Nancy". The art is top mounted in a triple mat, modern. Great item presented well. The only James W. Brown Seaman we found in the Civil War Data base is James W. Brown, Manchester NH, 24 years old, enlisted on 8/26/1864 as a Seaman, on 8/26/1864 he mustered as a substitute into US Navy and deserted on 4/4/1865. May be the same. USS Adela was a steamer captured by the Union Navy during the American Civil War. She was used by the Union Navy as a gunboat in support of the Union Navy blockade of Confederate waterways.
