A beautiful color sketch of a seaman sitting aloft on the Mast, "U.S.S. Sacramento, Off Wilmington NC" and addressed to Emma Burt, Tauton Mass with CDC APR 1863. On the reverse in period ink, "Dear Dear!, Orville B ... "Orville Bassell, Mt Dear". ... plus, an unmounted albumen image IDed on the reverse as Orville Bassell. Sacramento's first assignment was blockade duty off the North Carolina coast as part of the effort to eliminate Confederate shipping operations at Wilmington. During her cruising off the Western Bar at Wilmington on 1 May 1863, she captured the British blockade runner Wanderer.
