Union soldier's letter, with original cover, by James H. Brewer 6th Maryland who enlisted on 9/5/1862 as a 2nd Lieutenant into "H" Co. MD 6th Infantry. Promoted to 1st Lieut 2/11/1863 6/20/1865 at Washington, DC. The 6pp letter is datelined Head Quarters 6th Md Regt, Berryville Clark County VAS, April 24, 1863. In part, "You wish me to tell you the opinion of the people about the attack on Charleston. As far as I have heard ... they condemn it severely and all join in saying Admiral DuPont was scared or he would have taken the place. ... I am sorry for the failure as it will give the Rebels fresh courage. We are at least detached from the Maryland Brigade ... as some say we are I should be glad if it is true. As General Kenly was nothing more than a drunken blowhard.
