George Cadwalader (May 16, 1806 - February 3, 1879) was a general in the United States Army during the Mexican-American War and American Civil War. When the Civil War broke out, Cadwalader immediately volunteered his services to the Union cause. Due to his distinguished military experience, he was appointed major general of Pennsylvania Volunteers by Governor Andrew Curtin in April 1861. War Date Letter Signed "George Cadwalader, Major General Cmdg," 2pp., on printed letterhead Head Quarters Philadelphia Pa., Nove. 24, 1863. In part, "I have rec'd a telegram from the Sec. of War ... saying that I may place you and Joseph Rounthree on your parole until further ordered. The parole being to report yourselves upon receiving order from the War Department .... If you will be kind enough to come round here tomorrow ... I will be able to arrange it satisfactorily to you."
