George Washington Getty (1819-1901) was a career military officer in the United States Army, most noted for his role as a division commander in the Army of the Potomac during the final full year of the American Civil War. Getty's division, including the famed Vermont Brigade, made the initial breakthrough at Petersburg on April 2, 1865, and took part in the final campaign of the Army of the Potomac, which concluded with the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House.The 4pp. Letter Signed "Geo W. Getty" is written to General John Sprague, datelined Head Quarters 3rd Division, 9th AC, In the field near Suffolk Va., May 9, 1863. In part, "Since the death of the gallant Col. B. Ringold 103rd Reg. NY who fell at the head of his Regiment ... the Regiment has been somewhat demoralized, there being no Officer ... capable of commanding it ... the honor of the State and Regiment require that an able efficient Officer by appointed to the Command ..."
