A Union soldier 4pp letter written by Ira A. Simmons who enlisted on 8/29/1862 at Annsville, NY as a Private and mustered into "F" Co. NY 146th Infantry. Simmons was killed on 6/18/1864 at Petersburg, V.A. Datelined, May the 24, 1863, in part "I suppose you heard about the battle at Fredericksburg again. We had to march with eight days rations in our knapsacks ... marching 25 miles some days .. waded across two rivers .. the Rappahannock up to our waists. We were ordered to go in first and open up the fight. ... Company A was almost all taken prisoner when the enemy out flanked us. ... the weather has been hot enough to roast a nxxxxr. ... there was a slaughter at Salem Heights .. over 60 killed, wounded or missing .. When we were in the woods skirmishing, the boys all threw their knapsacks away. I also threw mine away ... we had to run for our lives with bullets whizzing past us ..." Comes with original cover.
