Five letters written by Albert C. Brown who on 8/15/1863 he was drafted into "C" Co. ME 16th Infantry He was transferred out on 6/15/1864. On 6/15/1864 he transferred into ME 20th Infantry and was discharged on 7/24/1865. All letters come with original cover and transcripts. They include: to his aunt, June 4, 1864, South of the Pay Monkey River and fourteen miles from Richmond, pencil, 2pp., In part, "It is just one month since the campaign commenced and I hardly seen or heard anything but the roar of Musketry and Artillery since. ... I have escaped the bullets so far ... the whole Army seems to have the greatest confidence in Gen. Grant as a military leader ..." ... plus, to his aunt, ink, Camp of the 16th Me. Vols, Near Weldon RR Va., August 7th 1864. In part, "Gen. Warren is fortifying here very strongly and I think it is his intention to remain here until routed by the Rebs ... I have been in Uncle Sam's service nearly thirteen months ..." ... plus, to Aunt, ink, Fort Wadsworth Va., October 7, 1864. In part, "There has been considerable fighting in this vicinity lately but our brigade has not been engaged ... they left us out because we are garrisoning these forts ... Our line has advanced within a mile of Lynchburg ... Old Lee better be looking about him for he may get gobbled up one of these fine mornings. ...." ... plus, to aunt, pen, 4pp. Fort Wadsworth Va., October 28, 1864. In part, "Sheridan has got the Rebs nearly cleaned out in the Valley and Grant has them nearly surrounded here and in fact, our folks seem to be victorious in every engagement lately. ..." ... plus, to brother, ink, 4pp. Fort Wadsworth, Dec. 2, 1864. Mostly personal content, including; "I think your picture is a very good one ... As soon as there is a chance to have some taken, I will send you a picture but you must expect to see a rough, sunburnt weather beaten visage, that is the only kind we have out here. ..."
