A good postwar Maryland citizen's claim letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by a certain "J. J. Hughes", [Baltimore, MD], Nov. 30, 1887, to former Maryland brigade commander, Colonel William P. Maultsby, reading, in part: "Will you do me a favor to name as many of the commands - that were stationed at Port Tobacco, Charles County, Md. during the war. The hotel and stables of Peregrine Davis, deceased, were used and occupied by the U. S. troops often and during the whole war. My wife was Davis' only child & she is now seeking to establish her claim before Congress - it will be insufficient to allege that they were occupied by the U. S. troops. They not only occupied the hotel as a barracks but made a hospital of it - several men died there. They used the stables for the cavalry & afterwards destroyed them - this is a very just claim and anything you can do & say that will assist me - will be greatly obliged - J. J. Hughes." Worthy of further research. Near fine.
