Holman Staples Melcher (1841-1905) was an American military officer, businessman, and politician active during the Reconstruction Era. A faction of historians and soldiers controversially contend that he led the downhill bayonet charge of Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg.Autograph Letter Signed "H(olman) S. Melcher" on official TWENTIETH MAINE REGIMENT ASSOCIATION letterhead, Feb 11, 1895. In part, "Will you kindly let me know at your earliest convenience if you had two acting field officers to assist you during our fight on Little Round Top ..." He continues to inquire the rank/status of A.W. Clark and Spear. A book, "With a Flash of His Sword: The Writings of Major Holman S. Melcher 20th Maine Infantry" was published in 1994 and provides letters of Melcher to his brother.
