Annual Register... for the Year 1778, 580pp., beautiful rebound covers, interior VG. A five-page report on the battle, in small part, "... the light dragoons had with their usual spirit attacked and routed the enemy's cavalry under the Marquis de Fayette ... Washington having received an express that the British had begun their march, immediately dispatched an order to Lee to attack them ...To his [Washington's] great surprize and mortification, when he marched about five miles, he met the whole advance corps retreating, which they informed him was by General Lee's orders ... Washington represents the number of British buried to be about four times greater than acknowledged by our Gazette..."Monmouth was the last major battle in the northern theater, and the largest one-day battle of the war when measured in terms of participants. Lee was later court-martialed at the Village Inn located in the center of Englishtown, where he was found guilty and relieved of command for one year.
