The black/white photographic is output to a rigid sheet of black plastic, 45" x 30". Dramatic. The 14 teenagers are crowded around two youngsters boxing. The youngsters are well dressed, most wearing ties, jackets, knickers and billed caps. The spectators are lightly smiling for this boxing demonstration. Our research places this in 1938 by the Life Magazine photographer, Hansel Mieth who took her camera down to Harlem while working on a project for LIFE Magazine. She was to capture the spirit that the Renaissance had formed. Not concerned by shooting the big names such as Noble Sissle, Jelly Roll Morton, Luckey Roberts and Fats Walle. Mieth turned her attention to the real people of the area. The photographer focused on children playing in the street, amateur musicians and women of the neighborhood buying fruit.
