Very rare Trans-Mississippi Confederate Treasury department pass, 1p. oblong 8vo., Marshall, Texas, May 15, 1865, issued to department clerk "M. C. Riggs" by department's auditor Daniel F. Shall for thirty days. In July 1864, an act by the Confederate government in Richmond established a trans-Mississippi treasury department with an auxiliary treasury department office opened in Marshall, Texas. David F. Shall, formerly major of the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry, assumed his duties as auditor. His duties included reviewing all claims, both military and public, made against the CSA government. He was a leading citizen of Little Rock, Arkansas and enjoyed a long career in both civil engineering and as a private real estate developer. Tragically, in 1871 he was inadvertently killed by pistol shot through a window during a dispute and is now buried in Mount Holly Cemetery, Little Rock. Negligible tape repairs to the verso, else VG.
