Union soldier's 4pp. letter written by Lewis M. Prall who mustered into "A" Co. PA 30th Infantry, 7/10/1861 and Mustered Out on 6/13/1864 at Philadelphia, PA. Datelined, Camp Tunnel, September 1st, 1861, writing to his mother. In part, "We marched to Tunneltown to join General McCall's Brigade where all the Pennsylvania are, which is about 7 miles from Washington... and only 6 miles from the Rebel camp. ... Nothing but the river between us. There are 14,000 troops with us. We are looking for an attack every hour. Our pickets and their pickets are firing at each other. ... On last Wednesday night .. the enemy tried to cross the Potomac but were driven back. .... We came here under General McCall ... we are ranked as the best Company in the Regiment ... I send you a star off a secession flag taken near Annapolis. ...." Unfortunately the Star is not present
