A great post battle of Antietam battle letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by a certain "mother", [n. p., but Washington, D. C.], Sept. 26, 1862, to her preacher son, reading, in part: "- I pray you may continue to improve & be health[y] itself. All letter written to me in confidence - will be purely kept so. Our dear beloved & esteemed friend Hugh McNeill [Col. Hugh Watson McNeil, 42nd Pennsylvania "Bucktails", killed in action at Antietam, MD., Sept. 17, 1862] ] is no much. He was killed on the battlefield of Wednesday - near Harpers Ferry. None knew him but to love him. Lieutenant Richard C. Clendanen [2nd Lt. Richard Clendenning, Co. H, 31st Penn. Vols.] was wounded in the leg. [South Mountain, MD., Sept. 14, 1862] He was brought home to his father. The Capitol, Patent Office & every place has been taken for hospitals since the last two battles. 5,000 soldiers from the last battle came into Washington & every other town & place is filled with them. 4,000 prisoners came up from Richmond. You never witnessed such a sight. They were barefooted, without hardly any clothes on their backs & looked as though they had been almost starved - distress of all kinds - keeps my heart aching all the time - a lady from Newville has been visiting the Lee's - she said she heard you preach and everybody liked you so much - your devoted mother." Near fine.
