Francis Kernan (1816-1892) was an American lawyer and politician. A resident of New York, he was active in politics as a Democrat, and served in several elected offices, including member of the New York State Assembly, member of the United States House of Representatives (1863-65), and United States Senator from 1875 to 1881. Autograph Letter Signed "Francis Kernan", 5pp, on Thirty Eighth House of Representatives letterhead, Washington DC, May 9, 1864. Also, free-frank "F. Kernan" on the cover. In part, " I sent you a copy of McClelln's report... may have made a mistake ... I am glad to think men are becoming more reasonable on political matters. Believe me our people are all there is of patriotism ... It is time for better partizan feeling ... Let each of us try to do what we believe our duty towards our suffering country ..." Also included is an uncut sheet of 4 NY State Gubernational Election
