Great Reconstruction era letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by "R. B. Scott", 312 Madison Avenue, Baltimore, [MD], April 14, 1866, to Major William O. Nixon of Lowdesborough, Lowndes County, Alabama, in small part: "- I think it probable - as the summer is approaching that Mr. Adler will find a tenant for our house on Road Street, Georgetown. It has been vacant - ever since Gen. Grant gave it up - he informed me that two applications for the house had been made - one for six months at $140 per month and another for three years at $1200 per annum. The last name was Gen. Lorenzo Thomas of Georgetown who Mr. Adler thinks would make 'a first rate tenant.' I replied saying that I preferred Gen. Thomas' offer but I thought we ought to get $120. per month. I requested Mr. Adler to see if he could not get Gen. Thomas to consent to give this much. The ladies of Baltimore have been all excited over a fair that they have been holding for the benefit of the Southern poor. It closed yesterday -n the proceeds amounted to more than $100,000. I was not able to do more than buy an entrance season ticket and go in and look on. It was a brilliant and gay scene and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves very much. I saw old Col. Garnett there who was indulging in the Garnett weakness of 'taking chances' in various raffles - he told me he had given Five dollars for a chance in a raffle of a $1000 piano - your affectionate sister, R. B. Scott." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. It is addressed: "Major William O. Nixon of Lowdesborough, Lowndes County, Alabama." Overall near fine.
