A Confederate soldier's four page letter, on necessity paper, written by David L. Anderson who enlisted into D Company, Alabama 8th, date unknown, in Selma He was on wounded furlough as of September 2, 1863 (arm amputated), in Invalid Corps May 17, 1864 and POW May 10, 1865 Talladega. Datelined, In camp 8th Ala Regt., Near Fredericksburg, VA, March 25, 1863 to his father. In part, "I wish it were in my passion to accept this proposition for camp life ... but there is no chance for me to get there ..If you could find a man among the conscripts in camp at Talladega GA that would be willing to come here and take my place and let me take his ... I may probably have to write the Secretary of War, but in the meantime do see if you can finds a man ..." The original cover is present with the mandatory soldier's endorsement "Private D. L. Anderson, Co. D 8th Regt Ala Vols
