1p, measuring 23.75" x 18", Paris, dated June 1, 1863. This rare Erlanger cotton note for 200 pounds of sterling is Series C, No. 812, issued in Europe by J. Henry Schroder & Co. and Emilie Erlanger & Co. Tri-valued at £200, 5,000 francs, or 8,000lbs of cotton. Decorated at the top margin with an image of Lady Liberty holding a First National Confederate flag gazing out to a ship at sea and surrounded by bales of cotton. The bond has retained 36 of the original 40 coupons. The bond is signed by John Slidell (one of the two Confederate diplomats involved in the Trent Affair in November 1861), C.J. McRae (served as Confederate States Financial Agent in Europe from 1862 to 1865) and the underwiters Erlanger and Schroeder. Presented in modern frame with deep cut mat.
