A great war-date Connecticut soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written on "The House that Uncle Sam Built" patriotic stationery with manuscript inscription referring to the U. S. Capitol reading: "J. Davis Wanted & Would Have," by Corp . John S. Smith, Co. D, 8th Connecticut Vols., [wounded in the head at Antietam, MD, 9/17/62] Moorehead City, N. C., April 20, 1862, to his sister-in-law, Rebecca A. Morrarty, Norwich, CT, in part: "- we are well that is John M. [Morrarty] & I for a great many are sick & several are dead in our regt. - all the rest of the Division [had been sent ahead] to take undisturbed possession of Moorehead City which we did. Co. E was sent to Beaufort, Co. I & F sent to Carolina City, Co. D & K are now in Moorehead City & G., B., H., C., & A. are over across the sound on the same island that Fort Macon is on - the last 5 companies have [had] a skirmish with the Rebels every day & drove them into the fort. Capt. [Thomas D.] Sheffield of Co. H is mortally wounded, the ball striking him in the pit of the stomach & coming out of his back bone. [The wound, on April 12, 1862, proved not to be fatal.] A private in the same company was wounded in the hip. We have completed a fine breastwork& mounted 6 mortars - under the fire of heavy guns of the fort. Col. Edward Harland [brigadier general, Nov. 29, 1862] is sick & the major [Henry Appelman who was wounded in a canister ball in this move] is in command of the 5 companies - Capt. Edward Ward is in command of this post in Moorehead City. The Lieut. Col. [Andrew Terry] resigned & the major - will be promoted - & Captain Ward promoted to major. He is a brave & noble & efficient officer & is well worthy of his office- Corporal H. N. Livermore, Co. D died of typhoid fever & E. J. Comstock, Co. D of the same. They were both from Lebanon & Deacon McCall knew them both - John Smith, Co. D, 8th Reg. C. V., Coast Division, Burnside's Expedition. Negligible toning, else VG
