A great war-date Union volunteer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written on colorful "New Hampshire. For The Union" patriotic stationery by Charles Magnus by Private John Tidd, Co. B, 109th New York Volunteers, "Savage Station, [near Annapolis, Maryland], Nov. 24, 1862," to his friend, Mary, in part: "- welt Beltsville, [Maryland] last Thursday morning - your mother wanted to know about Capt. [John H.] Hyde's [Company A, 9th New York Heavy Artillery] going to Washington on a spree. This is the first time I have ever heard - he has been in Washington a good many times on business, but I don't think he ever went for the purpose of getting drunk. I haven't seen him out of the way since we have been here. The boys play cards - but not for money. They don't drink much because they are not allowed to - I dare say drink less than when at home - we haven't received any pay since we have been here - I have got most out of money and so have most of the boys. I should have had enough if I had not lent some to the boys - James Parker [Co. B, WIA Wilderness, VA, 5/06/64] was promoted to eighth corporal a few days ago and Jeptha Crance [Co. B] reduced to the ranks. Well Mary, how does the cooper shop get along. Can you get as many shaving as usual - I cannot think of anything more - except that we have got through drilling for the winter - John Tidd." Light soiling, else VG.
