War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sergeant Charles J. Baxter, Co. F, 27th New Jersey Vols., "Lamp Seminary near Fairfax Seminary, Va., Nov. 23, 1862," to his parents, reading, in part: "- Daniel is quite unwell - he is much in need of someone to take care of him. He went with us on picket duty Monday morning - we marched seven miles to the scene of duty which - completely exhaust him. A loyal & very hospitable gentleman happening to live near [cared for him.] He was well cared for until Tuesday morning when he was taken back to camp in an ambulance - the Lieut. Col. & Major seem to have a great deal of sympathy for him. They called to see him just after dinner & immediately took steps toward giving him better accommodations. Lieut. Col. gave up his room in a dwelling adjoining the camp ground & procured a bed for him from the hospital - if we should lose our captain - or he should resign because of ill health the Vernon boys would miss him sadly enough. We would be subjected to the severest kind of discipline for the Lieuts. have said that he was entirely too easy with us. Our company is unfortunately composed of three different sets of men & each has a sympathizer in a commissioned officer - party feeling has sprung up among us - we are now under marching orders to Harpers Ferry - H. Fy. is fifty miles from here - Chas. J. Backster." Minor soiling at folds, else VG
