Interesting African- American content Civil War-date, Quaker woman's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Margaret Stabler Hallowell, Fulford, [Maryland], with Quaker date: "5th Mo., 26th [Day] 1863," to her Washington, D. C. post officer clerk husband, husband, James Shoemaker Hallowell, Jr. (1820-1886), reading, in part: "- Annie worked like a good fellow at cooking & dish washing. I helped at all and minding baby between times. She was tolerably good only, but today she has been very good - Annie is going to stay tonight with mother. Not a creature on the place yesterday but her & the colored boy. It is too bad for her to be left alone so. I am completely out done with Louis. At the rate he is going now we will get corn in the first of July - this morning he told me he was going to ploughing in the lower half of the field. He fooled & trotted away till dinner time so it was 2 o'clock before he ran the first furrow. He is the confoundedest pokey fellow I ever saw. Don't tell anybody I said that, but it is a fact. I will send Jimmy out to the road to meet Arthur & get what he may bring for us. Both servants are home today at work. Sam is at home planting his potatoes today, will be here tomorrow. I will set him to work in the garden. Eddy is busy in the shop making loops. His cough is right troublesome. Farquhaus have done all their seeding and are sending hay to town today - I saw from my window a wagon being loaded in their barnyard…thy affectionate wife, M. S. Hallowell." Near fine.
