War-date Washington, D. C. citizen (government worker?) letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by "Your dearest, Leonard," Washington, [D. C.], July 18, 1863, to his New Hampshire friend, "Miss. Maryabbie Shattuck," reading, in part: "- Gen. Corcoran's brigade passed through the city Thursday. The Gen. is a fine looking man. His brigade is a good one. The 69th N. Y. is in it. They were going to N. Y. - the operations of our armies from the 1st to the 8th of July resulted in the loss of 80,000 soldiers to the rebel army with a small loss on our side - our armies are working hard this summer. The Government seems to be putting its strength in an effecting way. Another assault is being made on Charleston. The island known as Morris or Morrison from which the rebels bombarded Fort Sumter has been captured with its batteries. It is strange that a mixture of rowdies and secesh in some of our western cities should think that they can over through the Gov. They will find by sad experience that they cannot successfully resist the authority of the United States - the 4th Delaware Regt. is now in barracks near the Balt. Depot in this city. Darius Learned is in it - fruits and vegetables are plenty in the markets now. I hope that the people of our nation, while theta give due praise to the soldiers and officers of our armies will remember that first and above all, praise and thanksgiving is due the Lord - your dearest, Leonard." The letter's original stamped transmittal cover is included. Both near fine.
