Rare war-date autograph letter signed by ROBERT H. MILROY (1816-1890) as major general and Union commander at Winchester, Virginia, 1p. 4to., "Head Quarters, 2nd Division, 8th Army Corps, Winchester, Va., March 26, 1863, addressed to Messrs. Johnson, Clipp[?] & Co., reading, in full: "Gentlemen, Your very handsome & acceptable present by the bear is recd. For this and many other liberal favors recd. from your generous firm. Please accept the hearty thanks of both my private & military family. Very Respectfully. Your friend, R. H. Milroy, Maj. Genl." Edward E. Johnson previously served for a short time in 1862 as wagon master in the 29th Ohio while part of General Shields' command then stationed in the Shenandoah Valley. Overall near fine.
