War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Orderly Sergeant Charles J. Baxter, Co. F, 27th New Jersey Vols., "Camp Burnside near Newport News, [Va.], March 2, 1863," to his family, in part: "- we have the most beautiful camp here - it has been converted into a little canvas city - receiving new tents these have been laid out in streets - precision being observed. In the center street & under the flagstaff is a large arch made of evergreens under which we are marched every day when returning from drill. The arch is so large as to be seen quite a distance off being over thirty feet high. Each company has worked its street making it resemble that of a town. On each side of the streets we planted rows of evergreen trees. I never saw evergreens similar to those in the North - if soldier's life were always as nice as it is here, I should certainly reenlist. We can purchase everything here at almost as low a price as it can be obtained in New York - Chas. J. Baxter." Minor soiling, else VG
