War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Orderly Sergeant Charles J. Baxter, Co. F, 27th New Jersey Vols., "Camp near Hickman Bridge on the Kentucky River, June 10, 1863," to his "Dear Sister, in part: "- "We left Somerset last Thursday morning, encamped at Waynesburg Thursday night, at Stanford Friday night, Dick Robinson on Saturday night & reached this place on Sunday at noon having marched sixty miles. We are encamped on the Hauley estate within a mile of the river & six miles from Nicholasville. The whole of the brigade left Somerset with the 29th [New Jersey] but instead of stopping here with us went on to a new field of operations - their destination is Vicksburg. Had we not have been removed from the brigade during the march we would have undoubtedly accompanied them. We have nine more days to spend in Kentucky & I hope to spend them in this camp. We will start for New Jersey on the 19th inst. - Chas. J. Baxter." Minor spotting, else VG.
