Union soldier's 2pp. letter written by Mason Sherman Chambers who, on 10/6/1862, mustered into "F" Co. NY 169th Infantry and was discharged on 7/11/1865 at David's Island, NY Harbor, with original cover to his mother. Dateline David's Island NYH, Feb.20, 1865. In part, "Recruits are coming in pretty fast now, but I think the draft will take place before long ... I suppose you have read in the New York papers how Col. Baker is hauling up the Bounty Brokers in the city. I know four of them. They were on duty here last summer, Mulkern and Brown & two others of the 20th NY Bat. The news from the army continues good. Sherman has taken Columbus the Capitol of South Carolina and Charleston has probably fallen. ..."
