House of Representatives, June 19, 1874, 8pp., disbound, "Murder of Lieut. Eben White : letter from the chief clerk of the War Department, giving circumstances of the murder of Lieut. Eben White by John H. and Webster Sothoron." Lieutenant Eben White was murdered October 20, 1863 while recruiting black soldiers for the Union Army in Maryland. Includes letter of William Birney, Colonel Second United States Colored Troops, Recruiting and Mustering Officer, as well as a detailed account by witness John W. Bantum, private of Company B, Seventh United States Colored Troops.
