A Confederate soldier’s 2pp., letter written by Constantine A Hege who on 8/8/1862, he mustered into "H" Co. North Carolina 48th Infantry, was listed as: POW 10/14/1863 Bristoe Station, VA. Confined 10/16/1863 Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC. and took the Oath of Allegiance 3/14/1864 Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC.Dateline: Culpeper Court House, Virginia, November 3, 1862, to his father. In part, “We came here to Culpeper last evening before sunset and we expect to go to Richmond in a few days. ... We are camped on the side of a mountain near Upperville, Virginia. ... Tell mother to send me a pair of goulashes, some soap ... I want you to have me a large strong and able pair of shoes made and have Rapers Michael to put iron on the heels ... my shoes are about worn outr. ... Tell mother that I can not write at presnt because paper and ink is so scarce. ... I am very scarce in money ....”
