A Confederate Soldier’s 2pp letter written by H. M. Cannon who on 12/1/1861, he was commissioned into "I" Co. South Carolina 21st Infantry. Also includes an Autograph Note signed by H. J. Chappell who enlisted on 12/1/1861 as a 1st Lieut. into "I" Co. South Carolina 21st Infantry. He died of wounds on 7/8/1864. Datelined: Camp DuBose, James Island, South Carolina, January 16, 1864, written to Mr. Gregg. In part, “It is out of my power to give you permission to stay after your furlough is out ... I only wish I could give you permission, but if I do .. it will have a demoralizing effect on the men. ....” Then Chappel writes a note, You will please find enclosed thirty-five dollars. I would have sent it sooner but it was impossible as the QM did not have any funds ...”
