A rare Reconstruction era displaced Southern woman's letter, 4pp. legal size folio, written by "your sister, Piercy", Liberty Co., Florida, Feb. 21, 1868, reading, in small part: "I hasten to reply to your very kind - letter which has found its way to me away down here on Low-finger. You will doubtless be surprised when you see that I call it home. Yes, home - William - has built a good crib. We have a good smoke house. We live in a double pen log-house - there is only 13 acres of cleared land on it - we will have a large number of cattle to pen on it - Wm. paid $150.00 for 360 acres. Our old place is rented to Br. James & sister Martha, but they cant get hands enough to tend it all - I am glad to leave Bear Creek on account of the negroes. They steed everything they can and this year they wont work with white people. Everybody thinks there will be a war between the negroes and White before another year. There is no darkies in our country except 2 that I know of and they live 6 or 8 miles from here. We live about 4 or 5 miles from sister Amanda - we all went to church last Sunday to hear a Baptize preach - there is 2 Methodist churches each about 5 miles from us and our much loved Uncle John Van Landing is our preacher - last fall I was really anxious to move to Texas - if father's letters had have got here sooner we might have gone [March 7th] - Sallie, really I was thinking that from the way you always speak of Mr. Sherman that he must be an exception, but as he sowed the pepper seed I hardly know what to think of him now. William says he can beat him raising pepper, but I don't think that your garden could have excelled ours - my baby is 3 1/2 years old. Can talk plain as I can. I will send you one of his curls - I still am your sister, Piercy." Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover, addressed: "Mrs. Sallie Sherman, Caldwell, Texas" and a locket of hair that is mentioned in the letter. Overall VG.
