Union soldier’s 2pp. letter written by Richard Cutts Shannon who mustered into "G" Co. Maine 5th Infantry June 24, 1861, to “Charles”, VG. Datelined Camp Franklin, Va. Dec. (19), 1862, in part “The duties of camp are ever the same. We are aroused from slumber by the music of fife and drum as reveille is beat. ... I think it is the plan of the Government to crush out the rebellion altogether ... you say what of England and her menacing attitude? Truly affairs do look threatening in that quarter. The tone of the English press is much commented by our troops. Yesterday I heard some say they should not be surprised if we were soon ordered to Maine to protect the frontier ....” He continues, Dec. 20, 1861, “We are going to start for Picket lines within hours ... we are all in heavy preparations ...”
