John Tucker was the 3rd United States Assistant Secretary of War from January 29, 1862 to June 10, 1862 and the President of the Reading Railroad Company. ucker was the President of the Reading Railroad Company from 1844–1856. On January 26, 1862 he was nominated to be the 3rd United States Assistant Secretary of War. He replaced Peter H. Watson who had only held the position for four days January 29, 1862. In June 10, 1862 he was replaced by Christopher Wolcott.Autograph Letter Signed “John Tucker” 2pp., regarding moving boats to Ft. Monroe. Datelined: Phil’d, Dec. 27, 1861” In aprt, “I have a message from Gen. Burside asking me to send the two ferry boats to Fort Monroe subject to the order of Com. Goldsboro. They had gone consignment to Capt. Briggs as you are aware. ... I can not find such a vessell and know of no way to manage it ..unless you can in some way use the ‘City of New York’ which you know was only chartered for one trip. ... Please let me hear from you tomorrow by telegraph.”
