Thomas Alexander Scott (1823-1881) was an American businessman, railroad executive, and industrialist. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln appointed him to serve as U.S. Assistant Secretary of War. Scott was one of number of railroad men who coordinated a special train for him through the Northern states prior to his inauguration. Scott advised President Lincoln to travel covertly by rail to avoid Confederate spies and assassins.Document Signed, “Thomas A Scott, Actg Secy War”, manuscript on The Magnetic Telegraph Company, Morse Line, NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, AND WEST form, “War Dept Washington Nov 6, 1861, Rec'd Baltimore Nov 6, 1861, To Gen Jno E Wool (Ft Monroe),” in full, “Col Hawkins (Hawkins Zouaves) and Capt Biddle arrived this morning with dispatches. The subject is receiving careful consideration & we hope to arrive at definite conclusion tonight & instruct you fully tomorrow sending the dispatch by Capt.
