Post Civil War, Massachusetts Service Certificate, 21" x 16.5" engraved certificate, titled "Commonwealth of Massachusetts", Boston, April 19, 1870, issued to John C. Stewart, who on 8/26/1861, he mustered into "B" Co. Massachusetts 29th Infantry, with printed signatures of the Governor and Adjutant General. Housed in two sided wood frame. Fascinating piece in that it has descriptive, neatly penned manuscript information regarding Stewart on both sides of the certificate. From the front, the certificate has a 3-1/2’ x 4” albumen mounted photo of John C. Stewart, waste up in uniform. Then on the top margin is the enlistment of Stewart. Below across the bottom margin is the battle history of Stewart’s Regiment. The listing is in four columns and includes 28 line battles. From the back, in part “In charge before Petersburg, about 7PM, on June 17, 1864, the 29th Regt. went into action with less than100 men and lost about 1/3 of its number in killed and wounded. John C. Stewart was killed in this charge by a shell. ....” This is an extraordinary piece .
